Previously I had owned two labradors, each female. While these labradors were good hunters and companions, the search for the 3rd labrador was much more targeted.
First requirement was that the dog be a descendant of 'RAIDER'. For those of you in the Labrador game, no further explanation is necessary.
Second requirement was that the pointing trait be prominent in the lineage.
In Willa, we feel we have found a companion who is intelligent, good-looking with a wide, muscular chest, has an eager-to-please disposition, and who points like a champ.
Our dogs have always been members of our family and Willa is no exception. She lays by the fire on a dog bed or couch, whichever she prefers at any given moment. She sleeps with our children, plays with our Germain Shorthair Pointer and cat. As is typical of many Yellow Labradors, she is constantly underfoot while dinner is being prepared even though she has no idea what "table food" tastes like.
As a hunting companion, Willa has exceeded every expectation that I had when we first picked her up.
Her retrieving and marking ability make those in my hunting parties gush. Her pointing instinct is strong and rock-solid. She will hunt for all members of a hunting party, without exception. She works close and does not lead me on a chase of a hot, running bird. She methodically covers ground and if given enough time, will track down those crippled pheasants that seem to disappear in the thinnest of cover.
When we hunt, we hunt quietly. I rarely have to give any commands to Willa other than a few hand signals to go right or left. She seems to read my mind and will explore out of the way pockets of cover.
The combination of Taylor and Willa is sure to produce some fantastic hunting and family companions.
